About

After ten years working in the Internet industry, I'm currently pursuing a PhD in Information from the University of Toronto.

My research interests include: online participatory culture, user-centred design, mobile applications, and locative media.

I completed my master's degree in communication from Royal Roads. My master's thesis examined diffusion challenges of website accessibility amongst web practitioners. This research lead to me being awarded an honourary ambassadorship from the Internet Society to attend the United Nation's Internet Governance Forum in Hyderabad, India December 2008.

I have also studied at University of Toronto’s Strategic e-Business program and at Humber College’s Internet Management program.

I recently won a Canada Graduate Scholarship from Social Sciences & Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) for 2010-2013. Past honours include winning a Chancellor's award from Royal Roads, a Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate (SSHRC) scholarship, and two Apex awards for excellence in overall website and online annual report.

My career highlights include six years managing a financial services website, developing websites with a dot.com start-up, writing online travelogues for Canadian Geographic and Bootsnall.com, and co-editing a bridal magazine.

I explore Internet topics in my blog (www.glenfarrelly.com) and for Backbone Magazine.
