Thesis Title: More than Sunday’s Lessons: Sunday School Education, Literacy, and Nation-Building in Early Ontario
About
My dissertation is a socio-cultural history of the Sunday school in Ontario before 1871. In particular I am concerned with how the Sunday school was a site of nation-building in the period leading up to Confederation. My work connects the themes of nationalism and citizenship with literacy and religion. I am interested in how women, children and men actively participated in the construction of national identities through self-directed sites of literacy and religious education.
