My research, primarily devoted to contemporary media and public discourses, examines how technological and interpersonal networks link certain economies and bodies even while they isolate others. Is the "network society" everything Castells (2001) and subsequent theorists envisioned it to be? In an age when "everyone is connected," as privileged Westerners we also find ourselves more connected to ongoing global traumas and the suffering of the other. My research suggests that the new felt proximities of the global age may motivate certain practices of citizenship in the public sphere and ethical consumption in the marketplace, but these connections also fuel a neoliberal move among the privileged toward retreat, isolation, fortification and the individuation of our affective responses and our politics.
