About
Geoffrey Leonardelli is an Associate Professor of Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management (with a courtesy appointment in the University of Toronto’s Department of Psychology). Professor Leonardelli’s research focuses on how self-perception enhances human effectiveness, particularly in group processes, leadership, and negotiations. His discoveries reveal that people prefer to identify with and belong to minority groups, that people associate effective leadership with “being White,” that social exclusion makes people feel physically cold, and that perceiving expatriate employees as foreigners can increase the likelihood that coworkers will assist them. His work has been published in esteemed academic journals such as the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, Journal of Applied Psychology and Psychological Science and the highly respected theoretical collection Advances in Experimental Social Psychology, in addition to managerial outlets such as the Academy of Management Executive and Rotman Magazine. Professor Leonardelli’s research has been featured in The New York Times, The Globe and Mail, and CBC Radio and his research on social exclusion and coldness was included as part of the 2008 New York Times Year in Ideas. Since 2006, his research has been funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. Originally from the United States, Professor Leonardelli received his B.A. in Psychology from the University of North Carolina, and his M.A. and Ph.D. from The Ohio State University. Before joining the Rotman School of Management, he served for two years as a visiting Assistant Professor and Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University.
