How has the relationship between sovereignty and moral obligation been constructed throughout the history of the modern state system? What are the limits of moral obligation? Using historical case studies, this research tries to understand how humanitarianism has been constructed as a legitimate discourse of moral obligation within the wider context of debates about sovereignty.
